Doctor Who - 50th Anniversary Round Up

According to the latest issue of DWM, filming for the 50th Anniversary special of Doctor Who is close to completion and over the last month, there's been a fair amount of spoilers circling. Here's a round up of them.

Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman have been filming in London as the 11th Doctor and Clara (one of them inside the TARDIS, the other hanging below it - can you guess which?) find themselves being contacted by a familiar face ...

It's Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and she's got a scientific advisor called Osgood with her, played by Ingrid Oliver. It seems that Osgood is clearly a fan of the Doctor too if her scarf is anything to go by but if both The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors can have UNIT/Brigadier representation, then it makes sense that the 50th would too. Here's hoping they're better utilised than they were in The Bells Of Saint John.

Former Gavin & Stacey actress Joanna Page was one of the recent cast announcements for the 50th Anniversary and it's been revealed that she will be playing Queen Elizabeth 1 and her scenes are mainly with David Tennant's 10th Doctor (which implies that he appears prior to The End Of Time in this special) as well as ...

.... A Zygon. Yes, the favourite monster of David Tennant are one of the monsters definitely confirmed for the 50th special but it seems that their role is a relatively small one here. Still, it's nice to have an appearance of them after they were alluded to but not seen in The Power Of Three. Like the Ice Warriors this year, they haven't been radically altered either.

One of the more recent things being filmed involved Clara on the anti-grav bike and this place - Coal Hill. Just look who the Chairman of the Governors and the Headmaster are? It's a nice nod back to the very first story, An Unearthly Child as is ....

... I.M. Foreman Scrap Merchant 76 Totter's Lane. There's even rumours they might be recreating the opening scene with the policeman as well (aka PC Reg Cranford if you've been reading Shroud Of Sorrow), which I can't wait to see. The only person confirmed however we haven't seen filming yet is Billie Piper, which could suggest that Rose's role in the 50th might be a small one.

As for John Hurt, there have been so many contradicting rumours as to whom he's actually playing in the 50th. Some are saying he's Omega, while others are saying that he's playing an alternative version of the 9th Doctor (in light of Christopher Eccleston not reprising his role for the special) and others are saying he's playing a 'forgotten' Doctor which will muck up the order of the New Series Doctors.

Meanwhile DWM have confirmed that aside from approaching Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's already confirmed appearance, there will be no other former Doctors in the 50th. Of course, Doctors 4-8 will be heard in Big Finish's upcoming Light At The End audio with a tonne of former companions. While I'm not surprised, it is a little disappointing to have this confirmed. That being said, I'm sure the 50th is going to be brilliant nonetheless though.
