Cucumber/Banana/Tofu - Cast Announced

It's been a while since filming for Russell T. Davies upcoming gay themed dramas, Cucumber and Banana began for both Channel 4 and E4 and now some casting has finally been announced for the series.

Julie Hesmondhalgh, best known for her role as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, which she left back in January this year has been cast as the sister of the main character, Henry. This is the first TV acting gig that Hesmondhalgh has been signed for since her departure from the cobbles and it's nice that we will see her back on our television screen pretty soon.

Meanwhile Vincent Franklin (best known for his role on The Thick Of It) has been cast as Henry, half of the main couple in this series. The series will focus on Henry and his long-suffering boyfriend Lance (Cyril Nri), whose lives are turned upside down after a disastrous date night. The disasters involving a death, a threesome, two police cars and the Glee Christmas Album – Henry’s old life shatters, and his new life begins.

Also rounding off the cast for both Cucumber and it's youth oriented spin-off series, Banana are Freddie Fox (The Mystery Of Edwin Drood), Fisayo Akinade (Fresh Meat), Con O’Neill (Uncle), James Murray (Primeval) and Ceallach Spellman (Waterloo Road). The spin-off series will focus on young lesbian Scotty’s first love as well to 19 year old Dean’s mysterious family secrets while the main series is more focused on Henry and his life. It certainly looks like between both series and online companion, Tofu that Russell T. Davies will have all bases covered with these upcoming shows.
