Hungry: Channel 4 Commissions Irish Famine Sitcom

Yup, you heard correctly there. An actual comedy series based on the Irish Famine, apparently with a dash of Shameless for good measure.

Look, I'm an open minded bloke but from what I've read about this upcoming series (which has not surprisingly already inspired a Change.org petition to stop it being made), titled Hungry, I cannot see any good good coming from it.

The idea of a series centring on one of the horrific times in Irish history is a great idea but instead of a crass, unfunny comedy which will probably have too many outdated Irish stereotypes for it's own good, why not an actual drama that highlighted the sheer horror of that particular time period, even if it meant also discussing Britain's role in the whole saga as well.

The writer will be Dublin-based Hugh Travers, a 31-year-old, who has already had a major hit with a show called Lambo. He is a former film student at UCLA.
